For example:
7 + 5 + 2 + 4 + 3
Rather than trying to calculate everything at once, a child can work through it like this:
Start at 7 → add 5 → add 2 → add 4 → add 3
So:
7 + 5 = 12
12 + 2 = 14
14 + 4 = 18
18 + 3 = 21
The final answer is 21.
That may seem very simple to an adult, but for a young learner, seeing each step can make a big difference.
Why This Method Helps Children
One of the lovely things about this activity is that it takes some of the pressure out of addition.

You do not need to expect every child to solve these calculations mentally straight away.
If a child is working on:
9 + 4
they can count:
10, 11, 12, 13.
So the answer is 13.

You can also encourage them to use their fingers, a number line, counters, or small objects when needed. There is no prize for struggling unnecessarily!

“Let's see if we can get to the answer without making a mistake.”
For younger children, you can read each arrow aloud together.

One of the best ways to see whether a child really understands addition is to ask them to explain what they did.
For example:
“I started with 7. I added 5 and got 12. Then I added 2 and got 14.”
That little explanation tells you much more than a correct final answer alone.

You could spend just 10–15 minutes on it.
Start with one number path. Let your child solve it without rushing. Then look at the answers together.
If everything goes well, try another one.

“What number were we at?”
“What are we adding?”
“Let's count forward together.”
