Some math problems look much harder than they actually are.
You know the kind I mean. You put a few numbers in front of a child and suddenly they are staring at the page as if you have just handed them a tax return. 😄
The funny thing is that children often don't have a problem with the math itself. They have a problem with knowing where to start.
This is why I love step-by-step math activities. Instead of asking children to solve a whole string of calculations at once, we give them one small job, then another, and another. Before they realize it, they have worked their way through the entire problem.
And that is exactly the kind of thinking we want children to develop.
Start With One Number
The easiest way to introduce this idea is to give children a starting number.
For example, imagine we start with 5.
The first instruction says:
+5
So we stop and calculate:
5 + 5 = 10
That's it. Don't worry about everything that comes next yet.
Now we have 10.
The next instruction might be:
+3
So:
10 + 3 = 13
Then perhaps:
−7
And:
13 − 7 = 6
We are basically taking the child on a little number journey.
5 → 10 → 13 → 6
The important thing is that the child isn't trying to solve the whole journey in their head.
They are simply asking:
“What do I do next?”
That little question is surprisingly powerful.
Why Breaking Math Into Steps Helps
Children can easily become frustrated when they see several calculations together.
They may know how to add 7 and 5. They may know how to subtract 4 from 12. But when those calculations are connected together, they suddenly don't know what to do.
Breaking the problem into steps takes away some of that pressure.
Instead of:
“Solve all of this.”
we are saying:
“Let's just do this one first.”
Then:
“Okay, what's next?”
It makes the task feel achievable.
And once children experience that feeling a few times, they start becoming much more willing to tackle something that looks difficult.
Teach Children to Follow the Arrows
One of my favorite things about this type of activity is the arrows.
They make the sequence visible.
Children don't have to remember where they are supposed to go. They can simply follow the path.
I would actually encourage children to point at the arrow with their finger before doing the calculation.
Ask:
“Where are we going next?”
Then:
“What does the arrow tell us to do?”
If it says +6, add 6.
If it says −2, subtract 2.
Then write the answer in the next box.
It sounds almost too simple, but this is a great habit for young learners: read first, think second, calculate third.
Don't Let Children Rush
This is probably the biggest thing I would emphasize when doing this activity at home.
Children often want to finish quickly.
They see an empty box and immediately start writing something in it.
Instead, encourage them to pause.
Look at the current number.
Look at the operation.
Then calculate.
You can say:
“Don't guess. Let's see what the arrow says.”
That one sentence can save a lot of silly mistakes.
And yes, children make silly mistakes. Adults do too. We just call ours “Oops, I wasn't paying attention.” 😂
What If They Get an Answer Wrong?
Don't erase it immediately.
This is actually a great opportunity for learning.
Suppose the child reaches a number that doesn't make sense.
Instead of saying:
“That's wrong.”
try:
“Hmm... let's check that step.”
Go back to the previous box.
Look at the operation together.
If the child had 15 and the instruction was −6, ask:
“What happens when we take 6 away from 15?”
Let them work it out.
Finding their own mistake is much more valuable than simply being given the correct answer.
They begin to understand that making a mistake doesn't mean they can't do math. It simply means they need to check their steps.
Math Is Not Always About Getting to the Answer Quickly
We sometimes put too much emphasis on speed.
“How quickly can you solve it?”
“How many did you get right?”
But for younger children, I would much rather see a child who takes their time and understands what they are doing than a child who races through ten questions and has no idea how they got the answers.
Step-by-step activities encourage children to focus on the process, not just the final number.
And that becomes increasingly important as mathematics gets harder.
A Simple Way to Practice Addition and Subtraction
This kind of number path is especially useful when children are becoming comfortable with addition and subtraction.
You can start with very small numbers.
For example:
Start: 4
+3 → 7
+2 → 9
−4 → 5
Once that feels easy, increase the numbers or add more steps.
You can also mix the operations.
For example:
8 → +5 → −3 → +7 → −4
Now the child has to pay attention to the sign instead of simply adding every number they see.
That is where the activity becomes a little more interesting.
Make Your Own Number Path
You don't even need a printed activity to practice this.
Grab a piece of paper and draw a few boxes connected with arrows.
Write a starting number in the first box.
Then add simple instructions:
+4
−2
+6
−5
Give the paper to your child and say:
“Let's see where our number ends up.”
You can make it into a little challenge.
Start with 10 and see if you can finish on 20.
Or start with 15 and create a path that ends at 8.
Older children can even create the paths for each other.
Now they aren't just solving math problems—they are making them.
Let Children Explain Their Thinking
Here's another little trick I really like.
After your child completes a few steps, ask:
“How did you get this number?”
Don't worry if their explanation isn't perfect.
The goal is to get them talking about their mathematical thinking.
For example:
“I had 12 and then I took away 5, so I got 7.”
That's much better than simply hearing:
“Seven.”
When children explain their thinking, you get a much clearer idea of whether they actually understand the calculation.
Why This Skill Matters Later
Following steps might seem like a small thing when a child is seven or eight years old.
It isn't.
The ability to break something complicated into smaller pieces is useful everywhere.
Children use it when they:
- solve multi-step math problems
- follow instructions
- complete science experiments
- work with patterns
- learn coding
- solve puzzles
- organize their schoolwork
- learn new skills
In other words, we aren't just practicing addition and subtraction.
We are practicing how to approach a problem.
And that is a skill children can carry with them for years.
Turn It Into a Little Game
If your child isn't particularly excited about math practice, don't make every activity feel like homework.
Give the number path a story.
“Can you get the number to the finish line?”
“Can you find the secret number?”
“Can you follow the path without making a mistake?”
You can even let your child choose the starting number.
Or give them a challenge:
“I think you'll make a mistake somewhere. Can you prove me wrong?”
That usually gets their attention. 😉
A little curiosity can go a long way.
The Most Important Lesson: Take It One Step at a Time
When children see a complicated-looking math problem, our first instinct can be to explain everything.
But sometimes the better approach is much simpler.
Start here.
Do this.
Now look at the next step.
Great. Keep going.
Eventually, the child reaches the end and realizes:
“Oh! I did the whole thing myself.”
That moment is the real goal.
Because learning math isn't only about knowing that 5 + 5 = 10.
It's also about developing the confidence to look at something unfamiliar and think:
“Okay. I don't know the whole answer yet—but I know how to start.”
And honestly, that's a pretty useful skill for life, too. ❤️
